Sausage Cup
The annual Sausage Cup competition between Year 12 students and staff resumed last Wednesday with a highly anticipated volleyball match in the hall. While the Year 12’s brought their supporters, the staff brought their A-game, and had a comprehensive 37-15 victory. This takes the 2018 Sausage Cup overall point score to Staff - 2 v Year 12’s - 1. Staff head into the next round as early favourites to take the Cup. Competition resumes in Week 6 with netball, followed by basketball, touch footy and soccer.

CSSA Secondary State Athletics
Last Friday a number of our Secondary students braved a rainy start to the day to compete in the CSSA State Athletics at Sydney Olympic Park. It was a great day of competition, and the Covenant team performed very well, with many students improving on previous performances across a range of events. Some notable mentions from the day:
  • Isabella Dale, Benj Gulliford, Wilson Kelly, Matthew Leung, Mimi Murray, Hamish Sheehan and Luke Van Ratingen were State Champions in their respective events!
  • Mark Allan, Henry Burrell, Max Gander, Nina Hall, Sarah Pienaar and Dane Wattle also finished in the top 3 to make it through to CIS.
  • The boys Senior Relay team ran one of the most exciting races of the day to finish in 2nd place.
  • Matthew Leung set the record for 16 Year Boys 1500m.
  • North Met Zone came 1st overall
  • Covenant was the 4th ranked school in the state
Congratulations to all of the students that made it to this level and represented the school so well, and a big thank you to a number of students who happily helped out with the running of discus throughout the day.

Each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) encourages schools and libraries throughout Australia to celebrate Book Week. This week, Covenant’s Junior School enjoyed discovering Australian children’s books based on the theme ‘Find Your Treasure’. At ‘morning lines’ throughout the week, a Junior School teacher shared their favourite children’s book, one they enjoyed growing up and one they enjoy now. During lunchtime, there were treasure hunts with clues based on books selected for Book Week. There were also plenty of opportunities to create bookmarks, posters and iPad book trailers.

In conjunction with Book Week, the Scholastic Book Fair offered a wide range of books for students to purchase. The money raised will enable Covenant to buy new books for the Junior Library.

The highlight of the week was the Book Week Assembly. Students and parents were enthralled with the comical skit performed by the teachers, based on the book ‘Edwina the Emu’. The costumes and acting were unparalleled and caused much laughter from the engaged audience.

Whether a seasoned skier or a first-time snow-goer, each of the 42 Covie students – plus Mrs Freestone, Mr Monin, Mrs Purcell and Mrs Henderson – buzzed with excitement on the way to the Snowy Mountains on Friday 10 August.

Saturday on the slopes at Smiggin Holes was a little blustery and occasioned several stops at Mid Station for hot chocolate. In the afternoon, beginners worked hard on their stopping and turning techniques while our advanced groups smashed longer runs down Mount Perisher. It took us several hours to return to our accommodation that evening, due to a brief trip to the medical centre and numerous traffic incidents.

We’re very thankful for God’s protection of our group through these unforeseen challenges! Spoiled with plenty of powder and a bluebird morning on Sunday, we squeezed in as many runs as we could before collapsing onto the bus and dozing all the way home. Hearty thanks to Mrs Freestone who, once again, organised a ripper Snow Trip!
